Operation Sindoor: A Brief Overview

The Indian Army’s recent Operation Sindoor has emerged as a historic milestone in the country’s anti-terrorism policy. On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed 26 lives. In response, the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This operation stands as a testament to India’s military prowess and its “zero tolerance” stance toward terrorism.

Operation Sindoor commenced in the early hours of May 7, 2025. It was a joint effort by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, targeting nine major terrorist camps linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The operation utilised long-range drones, cruise missiles, and other advanced weaponry. Terrorist bases and military infrastructure in Pakistan’s Bahawalpur, Muridke, and the Leepa Valley in PoK were destroyed. Led by the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, a 25-minute mission near Muzaffarabad obliterated a Pakistani military base, arms depot, and fuel storage facility. Reports indicate that 13 enemy posts were neutralised in just three minutes.

The name “Sindoor” draws from Hindu culture, where sindoor (vermilion) symbolises the well-being and prosperity of married women. As all 26 victims of the Pahalgam attack were men, the operation was named Sindoor to represent the grief of the women widowed by the attack and India’s resolve for retribution. The operation’s logo, designed by two Indian Army officers, features a sindoor container and splashes of vermilion alongside the Indian Army’s emblem.

Operation Sindoor was not just a military endeavour but also a demonstration of India’s diplomatic and strategic strength. Following the operation, India deployed seven all-party delegations, led by leaders like Shashi Tharoor, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Shrikant Shinde, and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, to various countries to promote its anti-terrorism stance. These delegations informed the United Nations Security Council and European Union nations about India’s firm policy. Most countries, except Turkey, China, and Azerbaijan, have supported India’s actions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Operation Sindoor as reflecting “India’s changing face.” Addressing a rally in Bikaner, Rajasthan, he stated, “Those who came to wipe the sindoor of our mothers and sisters are now buried in the ground.” He emphasised that the operation was not merely a military mission but a manifestation of India’s resolve and courage.

Pakistan’s Losses

Operation Sindoor inflicted significant damage on Pakistan. Sources report over 160 fatalities, including 35–40 Pakistani soldiers, though Pakistan officially acknowledged only 11 soldier deaths and 78 injuries.

Additionally, a BSF video revealed the destruction of 72 Pakistani military posts. Pakistan requested a ceasefire twice following the operation.

Cultural Impact

Beyond its military and political implications, Operation Sindoor has left a deep cultural impact. Artisans in Varanasi have created sarees with designs inspired by the operation, featuring motifs of the S-400 and Brahmos missiles. In places like Katihar and Kushinagar in Bihar, many families have named newborns “Sindoor,” symbolising public pride and support for the operation.

Challenges and Future Steps

While Operation Sindoor was a success, it has posed challenges for India. Support from Pakistan’s allies, China and Turkey, could complicate India’s diplomatic efforts. Additionally, cyberattacks targeting Indian government websites during the operation were thwarted by the Gujarat ATS.

Brigadier Mudit Mahajan stated, “Operation Sindoor is not over; it is only temporarily paused. We will respond to any attack not just with words but with fire and determination.” This underscores India’s commitment to combating terrorism decisively in the future.

Operation Sindoor is a powerful demonstration of India’s military, political, and cultural strength. It has sent a clear message to Pakistan and showcased India’s anti-terrorism resolve to the world. The operation has sparked a renewed sense of nationalism and inspired Indians to move forward with unity and courage.
