Tragic Incident in Berhampur: Woman Sets Landlord on Fire Over Property Dispute
In a shocking turn of events in Berhampur, Odisha, a 57-year-old woman allegedly set her 72-year-old landlord on fire, leading to his death. The incident occurred in Subash Nagar on Thursday, and the accused, Sudeshna Jena, was arrested on Saturday.
According to the police, Sudeshna and the victim, Harihar Sahu, had been in a relationship for five years. They lived in the same house, with Harihar occupying the first floor and Sudeshna residing on the ground floor. The police revealed that Harihar had allegedly coerced Sudeshna into sexual relations, which may have contributed to the tragic event.
On the night of the incident, Sudeshna reportedly entered Harihar's room while he was sleeping, poured kerosene on him, and set him ablaze. She then discarded his mobile phone and the kerosene bottle to destroy evidence. Later, she feigned innocence by claiming that unknown assailants were responsible for the attack.
Before succumbing to his injuries, Harihar managed to inform his daughter, Madhusmita Sahu, about the incident. He told her that someone had sprinkled kerosene on him and set him on fire. This revelation led Madhusmita to file a complaint at the Baidyanathpur police station, prompting an investigation.
Following the complaint, the police launched an investigation and arrested Sudeshna Jena. The authorities indicated that Sudeshna's desire to seize Harihar's properties was the motive behind the crime. The police also noted that Harihar's alleged coercive behaviour towards Sudeshna might have played a role in the tragic incident.
The case has drawn attention to issues of property disputes and alleged coercion in relationships. The police are continuing their investigation to uncover all the details surrounding the incident.
